I am making the plunge - I've decided to purchase a tractor to cut grass in my suburban community and "shovel" snow during the winter. However, with this being my first tractor purchase, I am looking for a way to make sure I'm getting the most tractor for my money. I'm looking at BX 1830 and 2230, and want to know if 1) tractor dealers regularly negotiate prices on new tractors, or if prices are set like at a dept. store; and 2) what amount of markup I'm likely to experience when purchasing a new tractor. (I'm in Maryland, if that makes a difference)
I know they (the dealers) have to make a living, too, but I just don't want to give away ALL my hard-earned money... Thanks for all your assistance!

Being in sales myself with a fix price item I appreciate your question. When I purchased my first Kubota I went to local dealership and asked price. Got a line of bull and it was obvious. Picked up phone and called another dealer and over the phone again just asking was given a $1,000 lower price. 18% savings in my case. Boy first dealer got mad. When I priced second Kubota, found same thing with same two dealers. On second Kubota I did find another dealer with one hitting end of floor plan and he was willing to sell for true cost. ....

Do make sure that all the facts are given and you aren't missing any items from one dealers service to another. I often listen to people later that state they didn't get what they thought they were. I even had one fellow a couple of weeks ago that wanted his tractor serviced and was disappointed with the lower priced dealer's service and he wanted some work done on his and still expected the free trucking we offer while under warrantee. ....

Okay, now it gets really interesting. I was looking at the 18/22 hp BX's, and during my interminable research, I found out that 2006 will bring a new and improved model lineup! BX1850

BX24

Does anyone have any price points for the new BX series? Any comments on how they improve upon the prior years model? Any suggestions for a first time tractor owner who is swimming, er, drowning, in information overload? ....

Art has great advice. Be sure each is packaged the same. It pays to have all you can in writing. It just cuts down on confusion. Sales people make mistakes and they also leave. Even owners leave. ....

It never fails. I drove an hour to the "local" Kubota dealer on Saturday, with cash in hand, to purchase a BX1830 w/ FEL and MMM. When I got there, they had posted a closed sign on their door - too much turkey, I suppose? So I got a chance to poke around on the other tractors they have and darn it, I started to change my mind!
Then to top it off, when I got to talk with the sales rep yesterday, I found out that the “redesigned” 1830 will be somewhere around the current price of the BX1500.
So now I have to decide if I want to get a B7510 ($15,300 out the door is what I was quoted), a BX 2230 at $12,700 (w/o tax and doc fee) (no 1830’s in stock) or wait for an undetermined period of time to get a “redesigned” BX1830 that will cost closer to 10k. All are equipped similarly, with FEL and MMM. All I plan to do, in the immediate future, is move “inches” of snow and cut grass on small to medium sized suburban lots, and I’m in the mid-atlantic area where we don’t usually get significant snowfall until January or February.
I asked about 50 hr. service; they said that wasn't included. I also asked about pickup and dropoff, they said only within the first 60 days. After that I'd have to pay approx $120 for the service.
What do you think of all that? As a newbie, I'm interested in your advice. ....
